This study investigated the emotional experiences of pregnant and postpartum women in Italy during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic using a mixed-methods approach and artificial intelligence. A large national survey (COVID-ASSESS) was analyzed. GPT-3.5-turbo was used for emotion classification, and GPT-4 for thematic analysis. The findings revealed a significant shift in emotional landscape from pre-pandemic joy and trust to pandemic-induced fear and sadness. Thematic analysis highlighted key concerns related to communication from healthcare professionals, media, and peers, with fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and misinformation emerging as dominant themes. The study emphasizes the need for targeted mental health support and improved communication strategies during public health crises.
