This paper investigates the necessary competence sets for higher education (HE) lecturers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. A competence survey among university lecturers at the University of Pécs in Hungary revealed three significant digital education competence factors: Awareness, Professional, and Digital. Lecturers with higher professional competencies anticipated greater future use of digital programs and communication. The study emphasizes the need for developing both digital and professional competencies to support the digital transformation of HE. The findings informed the establishment of a Digital Education and Learning Support Centre at the University of Pécs, which has undertaken various initiatives to enhance digital and professional competencies.
