Processing Chinese formulaic sequences in sentence context: a comparative study of native and non-native speakers

Abstract

This study investigates the holistic processing of Chinese formulaic sequences (FSs) in sentence contexts by native and non-native speakers. A self-paced masking experiment measured response times. Both native and non-native speakers showed shorter response times for FSs than non-FSs. However, contextual effects only impacted non-native speakers' processing of FSs. The study highlights the importance of contextual effects in L2 teaching and the theoretical and pedagogical implications for formulaic sequences in L2 usage.
