Abstract

This study assesses aquaculture's contribution to food security, climate change, and biodiversity (FCB) goals using a traits-based approach and a fuzzy logic model. A systematic literature review identified key traits associated with FCB. Results show most traits relate to food security, with overlap across FCB categories. Algae and mollusk species generally perform well across FCB indices, highlighting their importance and potential synergies in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture. The study provides a biologically informed assessment for decision-makers, illuminating strategies to enhance FCB goals and informing socio-economic opportunities and barriers for aquaculture transitions.
