This paper introduces a novel ultrathin probe fabrication technique using 3D microprinting to create side-facing freeform micro-optics for optical coherence tomography (OCT) endoscopy. The resulting probe, with a diameter of 0.457 mm, is the smallest freeform 3D imaging probe reported, enabling high-resolution imaging of delicate organs and small animals while minimizing trauma. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through imaging of atherosclerotic human and mouse arteries, revealing microstructural details such as adipose cells, cholesterol crystals, and connective tissue.
