Abstract

This study estimates the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent literacy and schooling outcomes in India using data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5). Propensity score matching and inverse propensity score weighted regression methods were used to account for socioeconomic differences. Results show a 1.5–1.6% lower literacy rate among post-COVID girls compared to pre-COVID girls, with greater losses among those in the lowest wealth quintile and rural areas. No such literacy loss was observed in boys. The study highlights the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on girls' education in India.
