The diminutive morphological function between English and Pashto languages: a comparative study

A. Khan

This study by Afzal Khan delves into the morphological function of diminutives in English and Pashto, revealing fascinating insights into inflectional bound morphemes. While both languages exhibit this function, their approaches differ significantly in productivity and range. Discover how ancient influences like Greek shape these languages and their morphological structures.

Abstract
This study investigates the diminutive morphological function in English and Pashto, focusing on productivity, similarities, differences in inflectional bound morphemes (nouns and adjectives), and the influence of ancient languages like Greek. The findings reveal that while both languages retain this function, English uses limited inflectional morphemes, whereas Pashto employs a wider range of suffixations, differentiating it semantically and pragmatically. The study supports the hypothesis that languages from similar parental groups share similar morphological mechanisms, with English showing greater inflectional reduction due to modifications over time. Pashto's inflectional nature shows closer resemblance to Greek than English.
