Abstract
This study investigates the contrasting public perceptions of Confucius Institutes and Goethe-Instituts in developing nations. Utilizing lexical priming theory and natural language processing, the research analyzes news media coverage (2014-2023) to uncover differences in lexical features. Findings reveal a more established institutional identity for the Goethe-Institut compared to the Confucius Institute, which is primarily associated with language teaching and cultural dissemination. The Confucius Institute's stronger association with China and its government fosters a greater sense of "otherness" and negatively impacts public perception. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of public perception and institutional image in developing countries.
