This study evaluated the antiviral activity of sulforaphane (SFN), a phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables, against SARS-CoV-2 and HCoV-OC43. SFN inhibited in vitro replication of multiple SARS-CoV-2 strains, including Delta and Omicron, and HCoV-OC43. SFN and remdesivir showed synergistic antiviral effects. Prophylactic SFN treatment in mice significantly reduced viral load, lung injury, and pulmonary pathology, and diminished immune cell activation in the lungs. These results suggest SFN's potential as a preventative or therapeutic agent for coronavirus infections.
