RNA profiles reveal signatures of future health and disease in pregnancy

M. Rasmussen, M. Reddy, et al.

Exciting findings reveal that plasma cell-free RNA (cfRNA) can predict pre-eclampsia months before it occurs, showcasing an innovative approach to tackling rising maternal morbidity and mortality. This pivotal research was conducted by Morten Rasmussen, Mitsu Reddy, Rory Nolan, Joan Camunas-Soler, Arkady Khodursky, and their team.

Abstract
Maternal morbidity and mortality continue to rise, and pre-eclampsia is a major driver of this burden. This study demonstrates the ability of plasma cell-free RNA (cfRNA) to reveal patterns of normal pregnancy progression and determine the risk of developing pre-eclampsia months before clinical presentation. Using comprehensive transcriptome data from eight independent cohorts (1,840 pregnancies) and retrospective analyses of 2,523 pregnancies, cfRNA signatures predicted pre-eclampsia with 82.3% sensitivity and specificity, exceeding conventional methods.
