Abstract
This longitudinal study investigated factors associated with couple relationship quality in parents of NICU infants one year postpartum, comparing them to parents from maternity units (MUs). Better social support and a 7–14-day hospital stay were positively associated with the relationship in NICU mothers, while lack of shared sleep with the partner and infant during hospitalization was negatively associated. Depressive symptoms negatively impacted the relationship among NICU fathers. No differences in relationship quality trajectories were found between NICU and MU parents. Improving social support, facilitating togetherness during hospitalization, and addressing parental depression are suggested to strengthen couple relationships.
