This paper examines the spatial correlation of deaths in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany and Poland. Poland experienced significantly more excess deaths than Germany. Spatial analysis reveals a consistent pattern of officially recorded COVID-19 deaths, but strong spatial correlation for excess deaths is found only in Germany, not Poland. This difference is not explained by pre-pandemic regional factors and suggests that healthcare policies and failures in Poland contributed to the substantial loss of life.
