Abstract
This study investigated the prevalence of anxiety and depression and their correlation with daily routines among Hong Kong Chinese during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two population-representative samples (survey 1: n = 4021, survey 2: n = 2008) were recruited via random digit dialing during periods of low and high infection rates, respectively. Anxiety prevalence was 14.9% and 14% and depression prevalence was 19.6% and 15.3% in survey 1 and 2, respectively. Increased odds of anxiety and depression were linked to disrupted routines and lower socioeconomic status in both surveys. Depression was inversely related to avoiding crowded places in survey 1. Prevalences were higher than during previous crises. A heavier burden of psychiatric conditions was observed among those with disrupted daily routines and lacking novel preventive routines in the early pandemic phase.
