This study investigates the predictive ability of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) derived from schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and depression (DEP) risk alleles for COVID-19 susceptibility and severity. Using a sample of 11,977 COVID-19 cases and 5943 controls, the researchers found that the SCZ PRS significantly predicted COVID-19 risk, symptom presence, and hospitalization, particularly in women. No significant associations were found for BD or DEP PRSs. While the study suggests a potential genetic overlap between SCZ and COVID-19, especially in women, the predictive accuracy remained modest. Further research incorporating sex loci and rare variations is recommended.
