Abstract
This study investigates the correlates of the prevalence and importance of the trinary control system (formal, semiformal, informal) in rural China. Using data from 2343 respondents in 164 villages, the study found that individual and village factors predicted the prevalence of village committees (semiformal) and police (formal) control in maintaining community order. The prevalence of the four control mechanisms (village committees, police, government, and elite gentry) significantly predicted their importance in order maintenance. Implications of these findings are discussed.
