Abstract
This study investigates the impact of economies-of-scale on the survival of personalized and professionalized homestay businesses. Using a panel dataset of 551,605 properties in four US cities, the study finds that economies-of-scale provide short-term survival advantages to professional businesses but not to personalized ones. In the long run, the social benefits of personalized businesses outweigh the economies-of-scale advantages. Effective host-guest communication and high-quality products further moderate these relationships.
