New York, Abu Dhabi, London, or stay at home? Using a cross-nested logit model to identify complex substitution patterns in migration

We introduce a cross-nested logit (CNL) approach to study how individuals adjust migration decisions in a changing global landscape. Using migration aspiration data from India, the CNL uncovers richer substitution patterns, greater heterogeneity in responses to shocks, and limited substitutability between home and foreign options—outperforming standard logit models in fit and predictive accuracy.
