Abstract

This study reconstructs interannual summer North Atlantic–European jet stream latitude (EU JSL) variability from 1300–2004 CE using tree-ring data. The reconstruction reveals contrasting summer climate extremes associated with EU JSL variability, impacting biophysical, economic, and human demographic factors including wildfires and epidemics. The findings highlight the long-term influence of EU JSL variability on European climate and underscore the need to consider this variability when assessing future climate risks.
