The COVID-19 pandemic witnessed a surge in global protests. This paper investigates the relationship between societal conditions and protest emergence during this period using a holistic approach. A literature review identified key contributing factors, captured in a causal loop diagram. Quantitative analysis compared protest dynamics across 27 countries, employing statistical and computational modeling (systems dynamics). Results highlight the need for models that better capture the complexity of protest dynamics, suggesting that variables reflecting both fast and slow changes in social systems are crucial for understanding both the timing and intensity of protests.
