This review investigated the effectiveness of popular diets (from the 2016 U.S. News & World Report) on weight loss in overweight and obese adults, focusing on studies without specific calorie targets or meal replacements. Of 38 diets, 20 met the criteria. Data from 16 articles (seven diets: Atkins, DASH, Glycemic-Index, Mediterranean, Ornish, Paleolithic, and Zone) were analyzed. The Atkins diet showed the most evidence for clinically significant short-term and long-term weight loss. Further research is needed to evaluate other popular diets due to a scarcity of relevant studies.
