Effects of Mediterranean diet during pregnancy on the onset of overweight or obesity in the offspring: a randomized trial

S. Coppola, L. Paparo, et al.

The PREMEDI study reveals groundbreaking findings on the impact of a Mediterranean Diet during pregnancy, showing a significant reduction in the incidence of overweight or obesity in offspring at 24 months. This research, conducted by a team including Serena Coppola and Lorella Paparo, uncovers intriguing epigenetic modifications linked to dietary choices.

Abstract
The PREMEDI study, a randomized controlled trial, investigated the efficacy of nutritional counseling promoting a Mediterranean Diet (MD) during pregnancy on the incidence of overweight or obesity in offspring at 24 months. Children of mothers in the MD arm had a significantly lower incidence of overweight or obesity (6% vs. 30%, p=0.003). Higher MD adherence was observed in the MD arm, with similar weight gain between groups. Cord blood analysis revealed a significantly higher leptin gene methylation rate in the MD group (p<0.0001), suggesting epigenetic modification of leptin expression plays a role.
