This Mendelian randomization study investigated the causal relationship between educational attainment (EA), cognitive performance (CP), and suicide attempt risk using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of over 815,000 white participants of European ancestry. Single-variable MR showed that both EA and CP appeared to reduce suicide attempt risk. However, multivariable MR analysis revealed that EA, but not CP, was the predominant independent risk factor for suicide attempts, even after accounting for psychiatric disorders and behavioral mediators. The findings suggest a causal link between higher EA and a reduced risk of suicide attempts.
