This study investigates the interaction between dietary fat and sugars (fructose and glucose) on metabolic health using nutritional geometry. Male mice (n=245) were fed 18 isocaloric diets for 18-19 weeks. A 50:50 fructose-glucose mixture was more obesogenic at low-medium fat levels than monosaccharides alone. High fat intake generally worsened glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity regardless of sugar composition. Fat source (soy oil vs. lard) didn't significantly alter outcomes. The study reconciles aspects of energy balance and carbohydrate-insulin models of obesity.
