This study examines Netflix Arabic subtitles for scenes featuring nonbinary characters in 'Degrassi: Next Class' and 'One Day at a Time,' investigating how subtitlers handled the translation of nonbinary gender expressions into a gendered language like Arabic. The results revealed inconsistencies in pronoun usage, frequent misgendering due to grammatical agreement errors, and inappropriate language choices. These issues stemmed from the subtitlers' apparent lack of understanding of nonbinary identities, often resorting to language aligned with the characters' biological sex rather than their self-identified gender. The study recommends further research into AV materials on other platforms and explores the complexities of translating gender-neutral language into gendered languages.
