Abstract
This retrospective study examined progress towards diversity among senior higher education academics and managers in England and Wales, focusing on the intersection of gender and ethnicity. Using employment records from 2012-2019, it assessed trends in representation of ethnic minority women and the impact of Athena SWAN and Race Equality Charter awards. Results showed increased representation of ethnic minority females, but disparities persisted, particularly for Black women. Diversity initiatives demonstrated a positive impact, with no evidence of competing agendas. Further research is needed to investigate structural factors and external influences like the COVID-19 pandemic.
