This article explores the political aspects of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) by examining the ongoing involvement of France and Italy, two founding countries. Based on expert interviews and EHEA communications, the study reveals the EHEA as a political platform for cross-country relations and crisis response. France and Italy's involvement reflects their internal politics and the evolving EHEA political ethos, contributing to a better understanding of the EHEA's political nature and its impact on higher education policy.
