Breaking the hard-to-abate bottleneck in China's path to carbon neutrality with clean hydrogen

X. Yang, C. P. Nielsen, et al.

This paper investigates how clean hydrogen can play a critical role in reducing emissions in China's hard-to-abate sectors, including heavy industry and heavy-duty transport. The research, conducted by Xi Yang, Chris P. Nielsen, Shaojie Song, and Michael B. McElroy, reveals the potential for massive cost savings in emissions reduction strategies.... show more
Abstract
Countries such as China face a bottleneck to carbon neutrality from hard-to-abate (HTA) sectors, notably heavy industry and heavy-duty transport. Using an integrated dynamic least-cost modelling analysis, the study finds clean hydrogen can serve as both major energy carrier and feedstock to significantly reduce emissions in heavy industry, fuel up to 50% of heavy-duty truck and bus fleets by 2060, and contribute to shipping decarbonization. A realistic clean hydrogen scenario reaching 65.7 Mt of production in 2060 could avoid US$1.72 trillion in new investment relative to a no-hydrogen pathway. Results demonstrate the value of clean hydrogen in HTA sectors for China and provide insights for other developing economies pursuing net-zero goals.
