Abstract
Oceanic eddies are believed to concentrate marine life. This study examines the response of forage fauna to eddies using shipboard acoustics data from 999 eddies globally. While eddies impact surface temperatures and phytoplankton, only 13% show significant effects on forage fauna, with only 6% exhibiting an oasis effect. The oasis effect occurs in both anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies, marked by high eddy amplitude and strong water-mass trapping. This highlights the complex nature of eddy aggregation and the need for further research.
