Abstract
This cohort study examined suicidal thoughts and behavior (STB) in an RCT (N=80) of smartphone-delivered CBT for BDD. It aimed to characterize lifetime STB prevalence and estimate/predict STB incidence during the trial. At baseline, 40% reported lifetime suicidal thoughts, and 10% reported lifetime suicide attempts. During the 3-month trial, 42.5% reported thinking about death or suicide. Lifetime suicide attempts and suicidal thought severity significantly predicted death/suicide-related thoughts during the trial. Multivariate models modestly improved prediction. The study suggests including participants with most forms of past STB in DMHI trials is feasible with careful eligibility criteria, frequent monitoring, and risk mitigation protocols.
