Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis examines changes in scholarly journals' recommendations by analyzing Instructions to Authors (ItAs) from 1987 to 2017. The study summarizes 153 studies and meta-analyzes how often ItAs addressed authorship, conflicts of interest, data sharing, ethics approval, funding disclosure, and ICMJE Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts. Significant between-study heterogeneity was observed, explained by factors such as time, country, database indexation, impact factor, discipline, and sub-discipline. Addressing of topics generally increased over time, but large differences existed between countries and disciplines, with Health Sciences journals showing greater coverage.
