Abstract
The study examines whether smart urban characteristics are associated with increased inequalities via the digital divide. Using data for 181 European cities that combine measures of urban smartness with EU-level survey indicators of the digital divide, the authors find a negative causal relationship between urban smartness and within-city digital divide. Results are robust across multiple specifications and robustness checks.
