This study simulates the sustainable population size and economic scale attainable with the Yellow River's restricted freshwater supply in 2030. Using a water resource carrying capacity (WRCC) prediction model and considering high, moderate, and low development scenarios, the results show the available freshwater could support population sizes exceeding projections and significant economic scales under all scenarios. The study improves upon existing WRCC assessments by using population size and economic scale as indicators.
