Using trace conditioning in mice, research conducted by Amélia Nicot, Pavankumar Yecham, Ilana Serin, David J. Barker, and Lauren K. Dobbs shows that acute cocaine can produce a transient negative affective state linked to conditioned place avoidance; this aversion correlates with low ventral striatal dynorphin (Pdyn) and a low Pdyn:Penk ratio, while higher striatal Pdyn confers resistance to cocaine-induced avoidance, suggesting dynorphin has opposing roles in intoxication versus withdrawal.
