Abstract
This article examines key debates in nationalism studies, focusing on: (a) the meaning of nation and nationalism and the relationship between political and cultural nationalism; (b) the origins and character of nations and nationalism; and (c) the civic-ethnic dichotomy and the relationship between nationalism and liberalism. It reviews existing literature, concluding that nations are socially constructed, historically contingent phenomena; that nationalism is multifaceted and lacks a single universal explanation; that understanding nationalism requires recognizing its open-ended, unstable, and particular nature; and that contestation is a source of power within nationalism.
