Mangrove forests, holding some of the highest carbon densities, have faced widespread deforestation. This study estimates net global mangrove carbon stock changes (1996-2016) using deforestation/forestation data and proportional carbon stock changes. A 1.8% reduction (158.4 Mt) in the 1996 stock was found, with conservation and restoration efforts contributing to relatively low net losses.
