This study explored the mechanisms between patient's disability and caregiver burden among Chinese family caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia. A cross-sectional study (493 patient-caregiver dyads) used the Zarit Burden Interview, WHODAS 2.0, Potentially Harmful Behavior scale, Affiliate Stigma Scale, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Results showed that patient disability, potentially harmful behavior, low social support, and high affiliate stigma were associated with higher caregiver burden. Patient disability directly and indirectly affected caregiver burden through potentially harmful behavior, affiliate stigma, and social support. Interventions targeting these factors may benefit caregivers.
