Abstract
This paper presents experimental confirmation of the theoretical prediction of dynamics for a single two-dimensional coupled resonance by observing fixed lines in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Measurements of particle beam positions allow construction of the Poincaré surface of section, revealing that resonant particles lie on a four-dimensional curve (the fixed line). This has implications for mitigating beam degradation and achieving high-intensity beams in current and future accelerators.
