Medium- and long-term outcomes of early childhood education: experiences from Turkish large-scale assessments

Abstract

This study investigates the medium- and long-term effects of early childhood education (ECE) attendance on academic achievement in Turkey using data from 5.6 million students. Results show a stronger correlation between ECE attendance and medium-term achievement (transition to upper-secondary education), with ECE attendees scoring significantly higher. While long-term effects (higher education) were less pronounced, ECE attendance was associated with higher rates of transition to prestigious programs and students' preferred choices. Additional analyses suggest ECE is particularly beneficial for students with low socioeconomic status (SES). The findings underscore the importance of Turkey's recent investments in universalizing ECE.
