Abstract
This research introduces a novel country-level measure of great power competition (GPC) in Africa and Asia, focusing on the United States, China, Russia, India, and France. Utilizing data from the Global Database of Events, Languages, and Times (GDELT), the study quantifies media coverage bias to assess relative power presence. A secondary, subregional measure of competition derived from qualitative analysis of existing literature validates the primary metric. The findings reveal varying levels of competition across countries, highlighting the nuanced nature of GPC and its implications for national strategies.
