A. Alshammari, D. Shaalan, et al.

This study by Alya Alshammari, Danya Shaalan, and Badriyya Al-onazi explores the motivations behind learning L2 Arabic, focusing on identity and the learning environment. Abstract
This mixed-methods study investigated the validity and reliability of instruments measuring two sources of L2 Arabic motivation: identity-related motivation and motivation from the L2 learning environment (L2LE). The study, conducted at an L2 Arabic learning institute in Saudi Arabia, administered instruments twice to learners and interviewed a subset. Quantitative analysis demonstrated instrument reliability. Interviews revealed strong motivation stemming from Islamic identity and cultural exposure, but also highlighted speaking anxiety within the L2LE. The study recommends instrument improvements and incorporating Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) instruction into the Classical Arabic curriculum.
