Influence of social determinants of health in the evolution of the quality of life of older adults in Europe: A comparative analysis between men and women

R. Llorens-ortega, C. Bertran-noguer, et al.

This fascinating study reveals how social determinants of health shape the quality of life for individuals aged 50 and older in Europe, highlighting disparities between men and women. Researchers found that factors like age, economic hardship, and location significantly influence well-being, particularly in the context of Southern Europe. This critical research was conducted by Rafael Llorens-Ortega, Carmen Bertran-Noguer, Dolors Juvinyà-Canals, Josep Garre-Olmo, and Cristina Bosch-Farré.

Abstract
Population aging due to declining birth rates and increased life expectancy challenges societies to adapt policies and healthcare systems to safeguard older adults’ well-being. Social determinants of health (SDH)—including education, economic status, and place of residence—shape health inequalities in older populations, with notable sex differences. Prior studies show SDH affect quality of life (QoL), and women often report poorer QoL, lower education, and worse health than men. This study examines, from a sex perspective and longitudinal approach, how SDH influence the QoL of adults aged 50+ across European countries. The main SDHs associated with poorer QoL were female sex, advanced age, economic hardship, educational level, and geographic location within Europe. Depression in women and men in Southern Europe was associated with lower QoL scores.
