Abstract
This study compares image restoration strategies in Chinese and American COVID-19 political speeches using corpus-assisted discourse analysis and Image Repair Theory. Analysis of 144 speeches reveals that Chinese leaders used bolstering and transcendence to project a responsible national image, while American leaders emphasized confidence and a leading geopolitical role. The findings have implications for national ideology promotion and crisis communication.
