Abstract
The article explores Tyrion Lannister’s rule in King’s Landing in A Clash of Kings through Foucault’s notion of monstrosity as a mode of exercising power. It argues that Tyrion’s governance employs monstrous conduct—excessive, law-unbound methods with potential for abuse—especially via manipulation and coercion. Yet Tyrion’s morality constrains the extent of his monstrosity and ultimately contributes to his loss of power. The analysis complicates the widespread positive reception of Tyrion as a ruler by showing how his ethics and monstrosity co-constitute his political practice.
