This paper examines the evolution of geographical positioning in Qing dynasty Taiwan gazetteers, transitioning from the traditional Chinese star field affiliation (SFA) system to the Western sundial theory. The authors analyze inconsistencies in SFA descriptions across various gazetteers, highlighting the challenges of applying a system rooted in ancient Chinese cosmology to the newly incorporated territory of Taiwan. The introduction of Western surveying and mapping techniques, particularly during the Qianlong period, led to the adoption of the sundial theory, marking a shift from traditional Chinese place knowledge to cosmopolitan knowledge.
