Abstract

This review discusses advancements in fiber optic sensors for battery management systems (BMS) and energy storage applications. It focuses on measuring internal parameters (temperature, strain, pressure, refractive index) and external parameters (temperature gradients, vent gases) for general operation and thermal runaway detection. The review examines the suitability of fiber optic sensors for various battery scales (electric vehicles, heavy-duty trucks, grid-scale systems), compares them to electrical sensors, and critically assesses electrochemical stability issues. High interrogation costs are identified as a limitation, and future perspectives for grid-scale energy storage fault detection and prediction are discussed.
