Abstract
This study investigated whether exercise could counteract the negative effects of gut microbiota disruption on adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) and related behaviors in rats. Rats with disrupted microbiota (using an antibiotic cocktail) showed impaired performance in AHN-dependent tasks, but voluntary exercise attenuated these impairments and the reduction in AHN. These effects were independent of hippocampal metabolome changes but paralleled caecal metabolomic alterations. The findings highlight the gut microbiota's role in AHN and demonstrate exercise's ability to mitigate microbiota disruption effects.
