Abstract

Distinguishing tsunami deposits from storm deposits in coastal areas is challenging due to their similar sedimentary characteristics. This study analyzes environmental DNA (eDNA) from microbial communities preserved in known tsunami and storm deposits, as well as intercalating soils and sediments, from Cuddalore, India, and Phra Thong Island, Thailand. The results show significant differences in microbial communities between overwash deposits and non-overwash sediments at both locations. The method successfully discriminates between tsunami and storm deposits, suggesting eDNA analysis as a powerful tool for identifying overwash deposits from catastrophic events.
