Abstract
This study investigated the impact of school closures on student access to education and learning rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on elementary school teachers' perspectives. An online survey was distributed to 911 teachers in the US and Canada. The transition to remote instruction was challenging for most, with over 50% reporting reduced effectiveness and inability to cover the full curriculum. Despite widespread digital access, nearly 65% observed decreased class attendance, and over 50% noted declines in student academic performance and widening achievement gaps. Socioeconomic status (SES) significantly influenced these outcomes, with low-income students experiencing disproportionately negative effects.
