This study investigates the use of "stability" in The New York Times’ coverage of China (1980-2020), using critical discourse analysis and sentiment analysis. A diachronic quantitative analysis reveals an overall negative sentiment, with positive sentiment only during the 1980s. Qualitative analysis shows negative sentiment focuses on sociopolitical and territorial issues, while positive sentiment centers on economic aspects, suggesting a US-centric, self-interested perspective.
