Abstract
This article investigates how China Daily (CD) and The New York Times (NYT) represent the Covid-19 pandemic as newsworthy, considering their different cultural and political backgrounds. Corpus linguistic techniques (keywords, collocations, concordance) were used to analyze headlines and leads from 2572 news reports (2020-2021). Results show CD emphasizes Proximity, Positivity, and Personalization in domestic news, while NYT highlights Eliteness and Personalization. For international news, CD focuses on Negativity, Impact, Superlativeness, and Eliteness, whereas NYT emphasizes Negativity, Impact, and Proximity. CD exhibits a stronger tendency towards positive self-representation and negative other-representation.
